1ST THINGS 1ST
Maturing Spiritually—“in favor with God” (Part 2)
Luke 15:11-32

Series Introduction: In Luke 2:52 we read that Jesus grew in the same four areas we should grow to be fully mature. Just as He, we are expected to mature mentally, physically, spiritually, and relationally.

Introduction: Do you desire to get back to the place where you once were with God, to a place of joy and fulfillment? Do you need a fresh touch from Him? Brokenness is the only way back, the only path to change which leads to abiding.

The Sincerity of Brokenness:

  • The response of humility to obedience when God convicts
  • The shattering of the will so that the Holy Spirit can take control (Psalm 34:18)
Contrite means “brokenhearted over sin” (Psalms 51:17)

The Steps to Brokenness:  (Prayer for those wayward)

  • He came to himself (Luke 15:17) (comes to an end of themselves)
  • He chose to arise (Luke 15:18a) (chooses to remove themselves)
  • He confessed his sin (Luke 15:18b-19)(agrees w/God about their sin)

The Signs of Brokenness:

  • Desire to be free than live in bondage (Luke 15:20a)
  • Desire to serve rather than be served (Luke 15:20b-21)
  • Desire to be restored and face the consequences (Luke 15:21)
  • Desire to focus on healing than anger (Luke 15:22-28a)
  • Desire to focus on humility than jealousy (Luke 15:28b-30)
  • Desire to trust decision-makers & authority than assume the worst (Luke 15:31)
  • Desire to do the right thing than defend pride (Luke 15:32)

Application: As followers of Jesus, we need to realize that healthy living involves maturing mentally, physically, relationally, and most of all, spiritually. If the enemy can defeat us in one of these areas, then he has a foothold in our lives. These footholds can keep us from producing the fruit God intends.

My Daily Abiding (Worship) Journey

Date:

“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.” (Luke 2:52)

“So, Jesus answered and said, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’”  (Luke 10:27)

How did I grow…   or  How did I invest to mature…

spiritually today? (prayer/God’s Word)

physically today? (diet/exercise)

emotionally today? (anxiety/stress)

intellectually today? (knowledge/wisdom)

relationally today? (dealt with others/invest in others)
