EXPERIENCING GOD
“The Pursuing Love of God”
1 John 3:1-3
“He (Jesus) said to him,
‘Love the Lord your God
with all your heart,
with all your soul,
and with all your mind.
This is the greatest
and most important command.’”
(Matthew 22:37-38)
Introduction: Because God loved us first (He pursued us), the love we have for Him is a reflection of His love. Therefore, to truly love God, we must attempt to understand His love for us and respond accordingly.
The Magnitude of God’s Love
Its Privilege (1 John 3:1a) (1 John 4:19) (Romans 5:8)
Its Perplexity (1 John 3:1b) (Ephesians 3:17-19)
The Mystery of God’s Love
Our Transformation
--Present Reality (1 John 3:2a)
--Future Reality (1 John 3:2b)
His Revelation (1 John 3:2c) (1 Corinthians 13:10-12)
The Motivation of God’s Love
His Redemption of Love—His desire to pursue us (1 John 3:3a) (1 Peter 1:3-5)
--His Son died in our place (Romans 5:6)
--His Son paid the price for our sin (Ephesians 1:7)
--His Son made us right before God (Romans 4:25)
--His Son made us a child of God (Ephesians 1:5)
Our Response of Love—our desire to pursue Him (3:3b) (2:3-6)
Application: Unbelievers sin against their Creator; while believers, sin against their Father. Unbelievers sin against the law of God; while believers, sin against the love of God.
“Our life as a follower of Jesus should be a pursuing, passionate response to an unimaginable love extended to us by a loving God
expressed through the One revealed to us known as Jesus—Our Lead Story.”
Can your love for Him be described as His love for you, pursuing and passionate?
