SUIT UP!
“Armed & Dangerous—Helmet of Salvation & Sword of the Spirit”
Ephesians 6:17; Other Passages

Introduction: The helmet and the sword of the soldier were both very important in a first century battle. The helmet protected the abilities of the soldier while the sword enabled the soldier to have victory over their opponent.

The Helmet of Salvation (Ephesians 6:17a)

Past—security (justification)--the past reality of our salvation delivered us from the penalty of sin (Romans 5:1-5)

Present—process (sanctification)--the present reality of our salvation frees us from the power of sin (2 Thessalonians 2:13)

Future—victory (glorification)--the future reality of our salvation will remove us from the presence of sin and the battle itself (1 Peter 1:13)

Bottom Line: The helmet of salvation is a picture of hope and assurance that comes from focusing on our ultimate salvation.

The Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17b) (Luke 8:4-15) (Acts 8:26-39)

“For the word of God
is living and active and full of power
[making it operative, energizing, and effective].

It is sharper than any two-edged sword,
penetrating (piercing) as far as
the division of the soul and spirit
[the completeness of a person],

and of both joints and marrow
[the deepest parts of our nature],
exposing and judging
the very thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
(Hebrews 4:12)

Logos—the total revelation of God to a general audience

Rhema—a specific revelation of God to an individual/group

Both “logos” and “rhema”
are both the Word of God,

but “logos” is God's Word
objectively recorded in the Bible,

while “rhema” is the word of God spoken
to us at a specific occasion.

A passage of the “logos”
can move into being “rhema”
if it becomes shown
to apply to a specific individual.

Footnote: (Ephesians 6:18) Even though the weapons are mighty; communication is essential to the soldier.

Application: To Be Successful In The War, We Must:

--Analyze Our Enemy
--Utilize Our Weaponry
--Realize Our Victory

“Yet in all these things
we are more than conquerors
through Him who loved us.”
(Romans 8:37)
